Agave
I was fortunate to have an opportunity to visit the Phoenix area earlier this year (in February, the cooler time of the year there). I lived in Phoenix before relocating to the Pacific Northwest. On those occasions I do get to return, I enjoy seeing friends there, eating at my favorite places (Abuelo’s, Restaurant Mexico, Chompie’s deli — the pastrami on rye, I’m drooling even now!).
Another favorite place I always try to find time to visit is the Desert Botanical Gardens, and the agaves in particular. Agaves fascinate me: the tones, textures, the unique patterns, scarring that occurs under compression, revealed during the unfurling of growth. These ‘defects’ are what make each one uniquely interesting and beautiful. Maybe there is a lesson in there somewhere. As usual, I spent almost the entirety of my time at the gardens amongst the agaves.
