Seattle Goodwill Glitter Sale, Part 2: Garments

October 23, 2016 by bretdossphoto

Before getting into this Part 2 post, let’s just recap from Part 1, Jewelry & Accessories: this fall marks the 33rd anniversary of Seattle Goodwill’s Annual Glitter Sale as well as my 3rd anniversary of photographing for the campaign.  If you are not familiar with the Glitter Sale, it goes sort of like this: each fall, the Dearborn location of Seattle Goodwill hosts a huge sale of donated designer fashion pieces — jewelry, accessories, and garments/textiles.  This year, the sale is held on Nov […]

Seattle Goodwill Glitter Sale, Part 1: Jewelry and Accessories

October 19, 2016 by bretdossphoto

This fall marks the 33rd anniversary of Seattle Goodwill’s Annual Glitter Sale and my 3rd anniversary of photographing for the campaign.  I look forward to it each year for a variety of reasons: shooting new items is always fun, each one is photographic puzzle to be solved I get to collaborate with Alyssa Cave for three shooting days, and with Katy Flynn and (this year) Angelisa Mozzone on garment day (more about that in the next post) I get to collaborate with Katherine Boury and […]

Perfume & Cosmetics

April 28, 2016 by bretdossphoto

Perfume bottles are often the branding signature of a product line. Branded scents and cosmetics may be the most accessible products to a larger target customer base. One quick pass thru any cosmetic aisle in any retailer, and you will see how critical photography is as part of communicating the brand: as the products themselves are not physically large (e.g. lip gloss), imagery is used to draw the eye, communicate the nature, color, design of the product as well as […]

Sharp

April 18, 2016 by bretdossphoto

Since I was a kid (more years ago than I prefer to say out loud), I’ve been a fan of pocket knives. My first was given to me by my father, and I still have it to this day. They are incredibly useful things, of course, but they also vary in aesthetics, designs, and function. I keep an eye out for interesting variations, even though I mostly just use them to open envelopes….  The blade in these images is ceramic, and is […]

Shoe Shine

April 7, 2016 by bretdossphoto

This exercise was to shoot shoes, careful to show shape, texture, height of heel, and color.  I had three very different pairs to select from, and I chose these very glossy shoes for the extra challenge that the shiny surfaces present. I used thick, shiny, black glass as the table surface: it provides a beautiful reflection.  This allowed me to emphasize the shine and shape of the shoe, as well as have some creative options for placement and negative space […]

December #teamVIVA Cover & Editorial

December 8, 2014 by bretdossphoto

For our December party-styles-for-the-holiday-season themed cover/editorial shoot with  #teamVIVA model Michelle Green, VIVAFASHIONISTAS Fashion Editor  Alyssa Cave  and I collaborated on the concept, looks, and the set design.  She also did superb hair, make-up, and styling at the shoot. Local designer Camille Goodman graciously allowed us to use her sleek, chic Yuki dress for this shoot.  I had first seen this when she wore it at the NYFA Fashion Show at SAM, and it was a jaw-dropping, audible gasp moment, and I’ve been wanting to photograph it ever […]

Gergana, Jordanah, & Jaleh

August 24, 2014 by bretdossphoto

Another #teamVIVA shoot, another wonderful time spent with terrific people.  I met up with teammate Gergana Ivanova to do an on-location walkabout shoot, featuring Jaleh designs.  Gergana had selected two of her favorite Jaleh designs, and showed up ready to shoot in the first look.  Jordanah arrived with the second look, and we got started.  Jordanah asked if she could stay, and we said “of course!” as we are always happy to have the designer on hand for any of […]

Just After Noon to Just After Midnight with Katy Flynn & Elizabeth Rhoades

July 23, 2014 by bretdossphoto

If you ever get a chance to work (or just hang around) with Katy Flynn, take it!  You won’t regret it. I’ve been fortunate enough to know Katy for a few years now, and we have worked together before.  Katy is a talented fashion designer, emerging into the Seattle market and beyond with creative, innovative garments that are simultaneously stunning, effortless,  and practical.  Many try to achieve that trifecta, but few make it happen as effectively as Katy has with this […]

Paper Meets Fashion, VIVAFASHIONISTAS Meets BAM

March 9, 2014 by bretdossphoto

You may recall that, while ‘networking’ is not an activity I seek out, the Seattle Chapter of Fashion Group International hosts events that are well worth flexing out of my comfort zone.  Another such event was held on February 11th:  The Bellevue Arts Museum hosted a private tour for our FGI Chapter: Stefano Catalani, BAM’s Director of Art, Craft, & Design, gave us a personalized tour of the exhibit he himself had curated: A World of Paper, A World of Fashion […]

An Afternoon with Alyssa Cave

January 8, 2014 by bretdossphoto

Being a part of the VIVAFASHIONISTAS team is fantastic.  The things I get to do, the people I get to meet & collaborate with, the opportunities around every corner, well, it is hard to overstate just how much I love it. For instance, I received a short message from our Fashion Editor, Alyssa Cave:  “Hey, I was wondering if you have some free time on the weekend to do a quick location shoot for a piece I’m writing for Viva?” Cue […]
