Depicting Verbs

I was fortunate to photograph the Co-LAB 5 event by Coriolis Dance. This week, I am pleased to share some images from one piece: “Depicting Verbs” choreographed and performed in silence by Andrea Larreta. It is a dramatic piece, merging sign language with contemporary dance which draws the audience into the emotional experience of failed communication. The audience reacts with complete, self-imposed, breathless silence, which further reinforces Andrea’s fervent longing to bridge the gulf. I found myself hesitating to shoot during the live performances, as I felt the sound of a shutter release would be intrusive. (I purchased a “camera muffler” for the final two performances…)
Recently, after seeing these images, Andrea graciously described the inspiration/intentions, and I have included her descriptions here.

“This one is hard to gloss in just one or even a few words, but I’ll give you some clues so you can make your own story. I’m thinking of my leg as being a high up place (a hill top or a bridge, somewhere with a view). The right hand is making the 3 hand shape, which is a depicting verb for many things, but in this context I think of it as someone falling.”
