My longtime friend Tom (since we were six years old, third house down across the street) was passing through my area on a driving vacation. His stopover here gave us the time to get caught up on the happenings in the past nine or ten months since I last saw him in our hometown. We had the entire Fourth of July to ourselves, so we went for a Walkabout (and a bit of Eat-about) nearby. We spent a large part of the day at the Mukilteo-Clinton Ferry area, where there is a nice park, a working lighthouse, food, and, of course, the ferry.
After some fish & chips from the walk-up Ivar’s, we bought round trip walk-on tickets for the ferry. We both grew up in northern New Mexico, so being around & on the water is a treat.
We enjoyed post-ferry-ride soft-serveice cream (root beer float for Tom, cone-in-a-cup for me), and walked and talked for hours more at another nearby beach park. As the sun was setting, golden light bathed the shoreline.
We spoke of the past, present, and future in the way that only those who have known each other since childhood, for nearly fifty years, can speak.
It was a very good day.
